I think every gay man (sooner or later) confronts a juncture in his life where sex is trumped by relationship. I’m sure there are some who will be content to whore around as long as possible–and more power to them. In the big picture, most homosexual men want the very same thing every other man wants: a stable, loving relationship with a long-term partner. Love is love is love and damned if we don’t all want (need) it.
A few weeks back, I received a screener of the new here! films/Guest House Films release of ‘Long-Term Relationship’. The DVD was officially released on Tuesday, November 6th and is available for purchase at your favorite retailer. I got around to watching it late last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it for several reasons.
‘Long-Term Relationship’ focuses on the budding relationship of two gay men–Glenn (Matthew Montgomery) and Adam (Windham Beacham) who meet through a personal ad. Tired of the dating scene, the two men see a chance for something more after a dinner date. What ensues is a warm-hearted look at finding a mate while dealing with philosophical, political, sexual, and personal differences. The road to what two people want or forsee is not always bumpless. Throw in Glenn’s motley crew of friends and confidantes and Glenn and Adam have a lot to overcome if they want to see that relationship come to fruition.
Written, produced and directed by Rob Williams, ‘Long-Term Relationship’ is a very sweet and touching boy-meets-boy story (and goodness knows there aren’t too many of those around these days). The extremely handsome and talented Matthew Montgomery is completely winning as Glenn (or perhaps I just self-identify with him a bit too much). Great supporting work is handed in by Jeremy Lucas, Artie O’Daly, Chuti Tui and Windham Beacham.
Clocking in at a swift 98 minutes, ‘Long-Term Relationship’ is one of those films that I think anyone could relate to. It’s not perfect (just like any relationship), but it is true to itself and highly endearing. Maybe I’m a sucker for a good romance. Then again, I’ll bet I’m not the only one. Sigh.
